Former Mayor for the Town of Glen Lyn, Virginia passes in death December 11, 2022. Hazel Marie Wade Pollard was born December 1, 1930, to Kyle Wade and Flora Blankenship and was the first of eight siblings.

She was of the Wade-Akers generation of 1848 from Floyd County, Virginia and the Meadows-Blankenship Generation coming from Ireland in 1633. She was the Great-Great Granddaughter of the Late Jacob Meadows that came from Rockingham County, Virginia to settle around East River at Glen Lyn, Virginia, later living around Christian’s Ridge, West Virginia.

Hazel was a member of Glen Lyn Baptist Church where she attended since 1967. She attended Narrows High School until the 10th grade until she had to quit to help at home when her twin brothers in 1945. She later went back to school to receive her GED and attended a local college while living in St. Louis, Mo. Hazel served on town council and later was elected by the people to become the first ever woman Mayor in the history of the Town of Glen Lyn, Virginia.

She learned how to use a cell phone, computer, text, and enjoyed using social media. Her first book was published in 2014 “Us Youngins and My Own Original Poems.” She completed a family history on both her and James which covered the Wade, Blankenship, Akers, Meadows, Thomas, Perdue, Pollard and Skeens families. Hazel enjoyed quilting and made lots of quilts for family and friends. She gave love to all, taking time to help in matters that she could be of help. She just wanted to live a simple life, never wanted to be “highfalutin” as she called it.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Gene Wade, Warren Wade, Lena Basham (Clyde), Daisy Mitchell (Cecil), Mildred Haywood (Elmer), and Walter Stanley Wade, Son Roger Pollard, son-in-laws, Junior Terry, Daniel Broussard and her wonderful husband, James Odell Pollard, they were married fifty-six years and five months when he passed in 2011.

Left with memories are her children, Rickey Pollard (Darlene), Judy Broussard, Vivian Terry; special niece Amber Walkup (Mark) who was raised as her granddaughter from age 9, daughter-in-law, Margaret Pollard, grandchildren Lisa Grose (Steve), Jesse Pollard, Tisha Terry, James Pollard (Rose), Sonya Terry, Becky Broussard (Sam), Paul Broussard (Kayla), Ben Terry (Cara), Great-grandchildren, Kinsey Grose, Brett Pollard, Haley Lawrence, Harlei Pollard, Allison Grose, Issac Boone, Sara Lawrence, Daniel Boone, Grayson Grose, Ambriella Pollard, Skyler Grose, Cambria Grose, Elijah Broussard, Jaxon Pollard and Jocelyn Broussard. Great-Great grandchildren, Myla Pollard and Baby Weston. She was also known as Mamaw to Aaron Walkup (Malia), Morgan Brinkley (Joey) and their children Briannah Dunn, Riley Mathers, Quinn Walkup, Wyatt Ferrell and Ella Brinkley. Brother Owen Tee Wade (Mary). Sister-in-Law, Shirley Broyles (Bob) and Dorothy Wade. Special friends, Pete and Shelby Akers and all of her church friends at Glen Lyn Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted, Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at 1pm at the Givens – Riffe Funeral Chapel in Narrows with Pastor Steve Howdock and James Riffe officiating with burial following in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel 2 hour before the service from 11 – 1pm.

The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Hall Rich Creek and CGCH for the care and compassion shown to Hazel. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Resident Fund at Heritage Hall.
