poindexter_canden_ronnellOn Wednesday evening, September 29, 2010, Canden Ronnell Poindexter was called home to be with his Heavenly Father. Only 26 years old, he passed away at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C. after waging a brave battle against cancer. Canden was born on April 21, 1984, in Christiansburg, Va. to Sandra Flynn and Ronald Poindexter. He was joined one year later by his brother, Gavin Carmine Poindexter. He attended public schools in Christiansburg and Radford, Va. In 1996, he, his mother and brother relocated to Tuscaloosa, Ala. where he graduated from high school in 2001. Canden completed his undergraduate college education at the University of Alabama in 2006. Deciding to pursue a graduate degree, he returned to Blacksburg, Va. and enrolled at Virginia Tech in the MBA program. Shortly thereafter, he became ill and, always the optimist, began educating himself and his family in his struggle with his illness. Canden was a loving, sweet-natured, courteous young man whom everyone loved. He always spoke kindly and was always willing to help others. He loved sports, especially football and basketball and was an avid Alabama and Virginia Tech fan. For a season, he helped coach his cousin’s basketball team helping lead them to an undefeated season. Canden is survived by his mother, Sandra Flynn, of Richmond, Va.; his father and stepmother, Ronald and Rhonda Poindexter; and his loving and supportive fiancĂ©, Launda DeOliveria and her mother, Leah (Mathews) De’Oliveria, all of Blacksburg, Va.; his grandmother, Agnes Flynn, of Pulaski, Va.; his brother, Gavin Poindexter (Erica and Kaelyn), of Hoover, Ala.; his sisters, Heather Robinson (Ronnie, Ciara, Trey), of Garner, N.C., Shakina Cooper (Deshia, Kevin, and Christopher), of Newport News, Va.; his stepbrother, AndrĂ© Watson, of Charlotte, N.C.; his aunts, Linda Williamson (Sheward), of Richmond, Va., Joyce Flynn (Khalil, Ahleyah), of Columbia, Md., Patricia Tunstall, of Baltimore, Md., Lucy Brown (Kenneth, Junior, Sean), of Baltimore, MD; Lily Davis of Mt. Pocono, Carolyn Adams, of California, Marlis Flynn (Chris, Antoine, Rachel), of Pulaski, Va.; his uncles, John Flynn Jr. (Marchelle, Brian, Breann), of Christiansburg, Va., Raymond Poindexter, Robert Poindexter (Stephanie, Jasmine, Robert Thomas), of Richmond, Va., Sammy Poindexter (Ellen, Corey), of Dublin, Va., Gary Redd, of Pulaski, Va., C.L. Coles (Ashleigh), of Sterling, Va.; and numerous other cousins, friends and special ones in his life. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Radford Church of God in Christ, 206 Russell Avenue, Radford, Va. Elder Ronald A. Watson Sr., Canden’s longtime pastor, will officiate the service. Viewing will take place on Monday, October 4, 2010, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. Internment will be at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, Va.
