Dr. Frederick L. Phlegar, 84, of Radford, died on January 21, 2014. He was born on February 6, 1929 and was the eldest child of Arch and Madeline Phlegar of Pearisburg.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1951 and served with the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio from 1951-1953. He received a Master of Arts degree from Miami University of Ohio and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Southern California in 1961. His long career in education culminated as Professor of Secondary Education at Radford University for 30 years where he also served as Chairman of the Secondary Education Department.

He was married to Barbara Lee Phlegar for almost 40 years and they raised five children together: Tomi Nave (Carl) of Roanoke, Rick Phlegar (Kelly) of Roanoke, Kriste Main (Geoff) of Vienna, Randal Phlegar (deceased), and Robert Phlegar of Roanoke. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Heather Farrar, Ryan Phlegar, Alex Main, Madeline Main, Marshall Main, Jamie Phlegar, Michael Phlegar, Matthew Phlegar, and Thomas Nave; and two siblings, Arch Phlegar (Barbara) of Blacksburg, and Mary Catherine McMillan (Neil) of Black Mountain, NC.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at New Dublin Church in Dublin on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 am.
