Phillips, Sheldon Lee
SFC (Ret.) Sheldon Lee Phillips, 75, of Christiansburg, born on 10 March 1935, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 5, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Berlie and Verlie Phillips.
He leaves behind to grieve his passing, his loving wife of fifteen years, Evelyn Phillips; two sons, Jeffery Phillips and wife, Norris, of Carrboro, N.C., Michael Kohls and fianceé, Heidi, of Hanau, Germany; two daughters, Brenda Bence and husband, MSGT (Ret.) Robert, Daniela Plant and fiancé, Richard Boissoneau, of Hubbardston, Mass.; one stepdaughter, Becky Cox and husband, Lloyd, of Willis; one sister, Goldie Boyd, of Indian Valley; and one brother, James and wife, Kathryn, of Woodlawn; four grandsons, T.J. and Zachary Plant, Cole Phillips, Calvin Kohls; one granddaughter, Alexa Phillips; three stepgranddaughters; one stepgrandson; two stepgreat-granddaughters; five stepgreat-grandsons; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and also many Army comrades.
He served with honor in the United States Army for twenty-two years, obtaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Throughout his career he was stationed in U.S., Germany and in the Vietnam Conflict. He received numerous awards and medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. After being honorably discharged, he retired in 1980 to Christiansburg. In his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and was an avid NASCAR fan. He lived his life with integrity, bravery and will always be remembered as our “Hero”.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, December 9, 2010, at the Indian Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Vinton Quesenberry, the Rev. Dustin Montgomery, the Rev. Harold Cox, and the Rev. Harvey Carico officiating. Interment to follow in the Indian Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the church. Flowers are appreciated or a memorial donation in Sheldon’s honor can be made to the charity of your choice.
