Carlyle Pennington, 96, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away on Monday, June 21, 2010, at Country View Assisted Living. “Absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” He was born in Speedway, W.Va., on April 23, 1914, to the late Pearly and Ollie Pennington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Orcal C. Pennington.

He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army receiving the Purple Heart, and serving under General George Patton in the European Theater. He retired from Hercules, Inc. as a Millwright.

He is survived by his two daughters and sonsin-law, Jeanene and Phillip Compton, of Dublin, and Dianna and Barry Epperly, of Christiansburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Gale and Ann Pennington, of Pearisburg; 11 grandchildren, Caleb and Corissa Epperly, Dawn Cox and husband, Rick, Shan-na Smith and husband, Adam, Regina Duncan and husband, Dale, Lisa Epperly and husband, Scotty, Holly Wood and husband, Joe, Robin Williams, Patrick Pennington and wife, Debbie, Phillip Pennington and wife, Yvette, and Benjamin Pennington and wife, Heather; 22 greatgrandchildren; one greatgreat-grandchild; and two brothers, Hubert Pennington, of Pinetta, Fla., and Arnold Pennington, of Speedway, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, June 25, 2010, in the Gateway Baptist Church with Dr. Scott Souther and the Rev. David Cope officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Gateway Christian School, 2196 Harding Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. Friends may call anytime after noon on Thursday, June 24, 2010, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr., SW, Blacksburg.
