William “Bill” Bryan Patteson, Jr., 81, of Narrows, affectionately known as “Coach,” went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, peacefully at his home. A lifelong resident of Narrows, VA, he was born August 5, 1932, and was the son of William Bryan Patteson and Lillian Hopkins Patteson.

He was a 1950 graduate of Narrows High School, and a 1955 graduate of Emory and Henry College, where he received a BA of Education and was a member of the Emory and Henry College Sports Hall of Fame. Bill also received his Masters of Education from Radford University. He began his teaching career in Henry County Schools then returned to Narrows High School where he was a teacher, coach, and athletic director for over 30 years. He completed his employment with Giles County Public Schools as Administrative Service Director in 1991. Bill was a faithful member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows where he served as a Trustee, Elder, Deacon, and Chairman of the Board.

Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ann Chapman Patteson of Narrows; William Bryan Patteson, III and Tanya of Narrows; Jane P. Garrett and Tom of Narrows, Judy P. Pollard and Bill of Charlottesville. Along with six grandchildren, Patrick Bailey of Narrows, Sarah Sutphin and Bradley of Wytheville, Bryan and Henry Pollard of Charlottesville, Will and Ty Patteson of Narrows, along with great grandchild Cooper Sutphin.

The family will receive friends in the William B. Patteson Jr. Gymnasium at Narrows High School; One Green Wave Lane; Narrows, Virginia on Saturday, February 8th, 2014 from 2 to 5 PM, followed by a celebration of Coach Patteson’s life, in the gym, at 5 PM, with Pastor Michael Biggs officiating.

In addition, a funeral service will be held Sunday, February 9th, 2014 at 2 PM at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); 605 Memorial Boulevard in Narrows with Rev. Jim McDaniel and Rev. Ed Tiller officiating. Burial will follow Sunday in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows.
