Alfred S. Owens, 90, of Elliston, Va., entered into the Gates of Heaven with his loving family by his side on Friday, November 13, 2009. He was born in Castlewood, Va. on October 25, 1919 to the late Floyd L. and Etta Ball Owens.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Nannie Belle and Woodrow Furrow; a very special great-grand daughter, Heather Annie; seven brothers, and four sisters. He retired from the N&W Railroad after 33 ? years of service and was in the CC Camps that helped to build the Blue Ridge Parkway from Roanoke to Floyd in Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruby Bowles Owens; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Glen Hale; along with five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He loved to hunt, fish, travel, and auctions. Most of all, he loved his family. He was a loyal fan of the Shawsville Shawnees and the East Mont Mustangs football and basketball teams. Our lives will never be the same here on earth without him, but our reward will be to meet him again in Heaven. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 12 p.m. from the chapel of Horne Funeral Service with Pastor Dusty G. Etter officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke, Va. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 16, 2009 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home.
