Opal Gray Nixon of Christiansburg passed away peacefully at her home on July 15, 2021. She was a devoted wife to Grover for 67 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Opal adored her grandsons for whom ‘She’d do anything for’. She was a second mother to many friends and relatives through the years.

Opal was very active in church including mission trips for the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board and programs for the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren. She was a member of the Christiansburg Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary and was involved in leadership roles in local girl scout troops. Opal worked for Blue Ridge overall Factory but mostly worked for MCPS in different school cafeterias.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John & Laura Testerman; and sisters, Mae Graham, Levona Eldridge and Helen Lavender. Opal is survived by her husband of 67 years, George Grover Nixon, Jr.; daughter, Lisa Lafoon and husband, Mal; grandsons Caleb Lafoon and wife, Stephanie; Andrew Lafoon and wife, Hannah; Micah Lafoon and girlfriend, Melody McCusker; sister, Wilma Brumfield; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry and Doris Nixon; special nieces, Coleen Shephard and Merle Nelson; many other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. at Christiansburg Church of the Brethern. Funeral services will follow at 3 in the church with Rev. Paul Stover officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
