Newman, Lorene Haynes

Lorene (Renie) Haynes Newman, 90, passed away peacefully in her home on June 1, 2017. Born May 6, 1927 in Martinsville, Va., daughter of the late Annie Williams Haynes and Orran Leonard Haynes. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Dewey Leon Newman. Survivors include her sons, Art Newman of Dunedin, Fla., Scott Newman of Silver Spring, Md., Stuart Newman and wife, Jenny Newman of Maineville, Ohio; and daughter, Nancy Newman of Abingdon, Md.; and grandchildren, Erin Newman of Eugene, Ore., Andrew and Elizabeth Newman; and great grandson, Beau of Knoxville, Ten., Lindsay and Mike Robinson of Milford, Ohio, and Lauren Newman of Cincinnati, Ohio. Renie graduated from Martinsville High School in 1944, received a Diploma in Nursing from the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Va. in 1949, a BSN at the U. of Maryland in 1982, and a M.S. of Human Services at Lincoln University, Pennsylvania in 1989. Renie combined her love of teaching with nursing to plan and direct a playschool at West Nottingham Presbyterian Church, Colora, Md., teach Health Occupations at Cecil County Vo-Tech School, Maryland, and develop a Peer Educator program at Cecil Community College. Renie spent many hours ‘playing in the dirt’ with her flowers, hiking the MD Appalachian Trail, volunteering with League of Women Voters, Hospice, Meals on Wheels, teaching Sunday School, and as a member of the choir and Mission efforts for the homeless at Head of Christiana Presbyterian church in Newark, DE. After moving to Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg, Va. in 2005, she became a member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. on July 15, 2017 at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, Blacksburg, Va. with a reception following. Graveside service will be held 3 p.m. that afternoon at Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations in Renie’s name may be made to Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, 701 Church Street SE, Blacksburg, VA 24060 or Deep Roots, Inc., Clairvaux Farm, P.O.
