newland_opal_mccallOpal McCall Newland, 93, of Pulaski, passed away Friday evening, January 29, 2010, in the Pulaski Health and Rehab. Born in Bluefield, W.Va., on January 9, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Grover C. and Minnie Cox McCall. She was the widow of Howard B. “Red” Newland. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Bonnie McCall, Mildred Carper, Nell Lacy, Betty French; and brother, Bruce B. McCall Sr. She graduated from Pulaski High School and Roanoke Business College then went to work at Appalachian Power Company for the next 40 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski and was a past member of the Pulaski Woman’s Club, the Fine Arts Center and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by a sister, Lila M. Groseclose, of Harrisonburg, Va.; a brother, G.C. “Mack” McCall, of Nashville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at 1 p.m. from the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hugh Kilgore officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski. Visiting will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.
