Eric Kenneth Newby Jr., of Radford passed away at home on Monday, December 18, 2017. He was born on August 8, 1929. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Freda M. Newby; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Douglas Thompson; sons and daughters-in-law, Clifford Eric and Charlotte Newby, Stephen Michael Newby and John Joeeph and Cathy Newby. Also nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren and by two sisters, Neata Stier and Charlotte Mitchell; and by many nieces and nephews. Eric was a cadet at VPI and joined the Army Air Corps. He was a retired Senior Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force and was a logistics engineer at Radiation Inc. of Palm Bay, Fla. during the NASA Apollo program. Eric and his family returned to Virginia in 1971. He attended and was a instructer at New River Community College and later became Building Official for the city of Radford. Upon retiring from the city he started “Ask Eric” his own small contracting business that he operated until January of this year. He was an avid fisherman and storyteller. A man of great intelligence and character above reproach, he inspired and touched many peoples lives and he will be fondly remembered by all that had the privilege of knowing him. At Mr. Newbys request there will be no visitation or service. He will be interred in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the American Cancer Society or a charity or organization of your choice. The Newby family is in the care of Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski. Va.
