Neuburg, Hugo Alfred Carl

Hugo Alfred Carl Neuburg, of Blacksburg, Va., was born to Ernest and Elsa Neuburg, August 25, 1920, in Hoboken, New Jersey. He and his family settled in Yonkers, New York. A graduate of New York University, he was a physicist and glaciologist. During World War II, Neuburg served in the Signal Corps of the United States Army. After the war, Neuburg took part in exploring Mount Wrangell, a remote and unknown mountain in Alaska. He specialized in climate information and cosmic ray research. In 1957, Neuburg won a slot in a newly-formed project, the International Geophysical Year, a joint enterprise conducted by several different nations, to explore and study Antarctica. His scientific background and experience in frigid climates enabled him to gain a place in that major endeavor. Neuburg then served for several years as chief glaciologist at Ellsworth Station, Antarctica. He led a crew that cut a core of ice to be shipped to the United States and analyzed. Another project involved running a one-man cosmic ray research laboratory. He completed a total of ten tours in the Antarctic. Neuburg was active in the world-famous Explorer’s Club, as a member, lecturer and technician. An expert photographer, he presented innumerable shows over the years to a variety of audiences, whether to students and school children or as part of a formal program for the Explorers’ Club and other organizations. Neuburg is survived by two sisters (Nadine Doughty of Evanston, Illinois, and Dagmar Bubriski of Williamstown, Massachusetts) and 11 nieces and nephews.
