Nelson, Phyllis Jones
Phyllis Jean Jones Nelson, 87, passed away Monday, April 25, 2022 after an extended illness. Jean was born in Bluefield, WV and called Christiansburg, VA home since moving with her family as a small child.
She was a graduate of Radford College (University) where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. She taught music in schools in Riner, Auburn and Bethel, taught private piano lessons, and served as the Children’s Choir and Handbell Director at St. Paul United Methodist Church for many years.
Later in life, Jean became active in community service. She served several terms on the Montgomery County Electoral Board, served as Secretary to the Montgomery County GOP, was a founding member of the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, VA, and was a member of the Alleghany Chapter of the DAR.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Teddy R. and Beulah Jones; her husband, James L. Nelson; infant son, James Theodore Nelson; and brother, David W. Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Valanda Nelson of Christiansburg; son and daughter-in-law, Ed Nelson and Toni Pimintel; granddaughters, Madeline and Molly Nelson, all of Blacksburg; nephew Stuart Jones (Melissa); and grand-nephew, Austin Jones of Moseley, VA.
The family would like to extend special thanks to her caregivers, who spent countless hours taking professional care of Jean – Tammy Whiting and Jean Wright.
Per her wishes, there will be a private service for family. A Celebration of Life Service with musical performances will be scheduled in mid-May.
In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to the Music Ministry at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg, or to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad.

Valanda, Eddit and Family. I was so sorry to hear of this. Jean and I have been friends all through school and at one time, we were neighbors. She was a very special person and this type of person doesnt’ come along very often. I am praying for you all and the rest of the family. I guess God needed some more anglels like Jean. God bless.
