Nelson, Cecil Gene

Cecil Gene Nelson, 69, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012 at his home in Barren Springs. He retired from Lynchburg Foundry in 1990. He loved living in the country and raising and rescuing animals. He was preceded in death by his mother Nina B. Nelson, and brothers John W., Thomas D. and James Nelson.

Survivors include his wife Deloris Shanklin Nelson; daughter Karen Furr and husband Brian of Roanoke; sons Roger Shanklin of Roanoke, Randy Shanklin and wife Joy of Pulaski, and Ron Shanklin and wife Selena of Wytheville; brothers Edward P. Nelson and wife Linda of Society Hill, SC, and Russell Cross and friend Debbie Carbaugh of Eggleston; sister Carolyn Rector and Bob Tickle of Belspring; grandchildren Payton Alley, Angel Shanklin, Derk Shanklin, Heath Shanklin and Chase Shanklin; and special friends Joe Crawford and wife Becky, Clarence Thompson, Zane Jackson, and Stanley Bedsaul and wife Juania.

Special thanks to Dr. Turski and his angels at Hospice of Wytheville, especially Michelle Duncan who provided extra love and caring.

A Celebration of Life memorial will be held Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 2:00 pm at 120 Crawford Road in Barren Springs.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to help defer funeral costs be made to Deloris Nelson, 120 Crawford Road, Barren Springs, VA 24313.
