Naff, Michael Frederick
Michael Frederick (Mike) Naff passed away on February 10, 2012, after a four year courageous battle with melanoma. Mike spent the last days of his life sharing encouragement, memories, and laughs with his family and many friends. The last moments spent with him were a testament to his kind and gentle spirit, and the love he had for everyone in his life. Mike was a resident of Blacksburg, and was born in Roanoke on May 24, 1956. He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Wayne Naff. Mike is survived by his wife, Diane, of 32 years; and his two children, Lt. Jessica Lynn Naff, D.O., and Ryan Michael Naff; mother, Phyllis Minter Naff; sister, Marion Naff Kepley and her husband, Jeff, and children Anna and Seth; father-in-law, Robert K. Ropp and mother-in-law, Ethel Williams Ropp; sister-in-law Debbie Ropp Liebler and husband, Steven; brother-in-law, David Kilmer Ropp; nephews, Kyle (and niece Catherine), Matt, Chase and Allen; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that he dearly loved. Mike was very proud of his children for their strong character, as well as their life accomplishments. His presence as a loving, wise, and fun husband and father will be greatly missed. Mike was a 1974 graduate of Cave Spring High School and immediately following his graduation from James Madison University in 1978, he went to work at Virginia Tech. Mike ended his 34 years of employment at the University as Director of Application Information Systems. There were many other aspects of Mike’s life that we will always remember and appreciate. Mike greatly enjoyed a good golf game, but mostly loved the fellowship with his golf buddies. He was a member of Blacksburg United Methodist Church, Blacksburg Country Club, and a proud member of the Virginia Tech Golden Hokie Club. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 11, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Whisner Building at Blacksburg United Methodist Church. We will continue the celebration of Mike’s life at Blacksburg United Methodist Church with a Memorial Service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2012. In lieu of flowers, we ask for donations in his memory to be made to the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060, or the Melanoma Research Foundation, at www.melanoma.org.
