Morris Jr., Frederick C.

Frederick C. Morris Jr., 81, of Charlottesville, Va., passed away on Friday, August 28, 2009, at The Laurels of Charlottesville following an extended illness. He was born in Blacksburg, Va., October 11, 1927, to the late Frederick C. Morris and Ruth Price Morris.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Gaynelle Canterl Morris; one sister, Patricia McVey and husband, Robert, of Raleigh, N.C.; nephews, David McVey, of San Jose, Calif., James McVey and wife, Katherine, and son, Alex, of Raleigh, N.C., and Tom McVey, of Raleigh; and many cousins and family members.

Fred attended Blacksburg schools and received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Virginia Tech in 1950. He was a member of the Corps of Cadets Band and worked on the school newspaper at Tech. He retired from Sperry in 1992 with over 34 years service in various positions. His career has always been in business administration and accounting.

Fred was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and has served on several committees, mostly related to finances. He attended other Methodist Churches and served in various capacities. He was District Treasurer for the Charlottesville District of the United Methodist Church over eight years. He was very active in the Wesley Foundation at Virginia Tech during college and while living in Blacksburg.

Fred loved sports, loved to talk about his Virginia Tech Hokies and was a member of the Hokie Club. He spent many wonderful weekends attending football games at Tech and at UVA. He served as an usher at UVA for football and basketball for many years. Fred also loved bowling and golfing with his friends. Fred also enjoyed square dancing and volunteering with the Senior Center.

He will be missed by his many relatives and friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Ooghe, the staff at HOPE and Infusion Center at Martha Jefferson Hospital and the staff at University of Virginia Cancer Center. Special thanks also go to the staff at The Laurels of Charlottesville Nursing Home; Dr. Jonathan Evans, and to the staff at Legacy Hospice. Special thanks also to sister-in-law, Helen and husband, J.D. Matney; and Missy, David, Kimberlyn and Coogan Thompson; cousin in-law, Pam, Joe, and Chris Terembes; and friends, Phyllis Deane and Mary Craig Davis, for their help with Fred’s care during his extended illness.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Elizabeth Foss and the Rev. Rocky Shoemaker. The family will receive friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Home from 6 until 9 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2009. Family visitation will also be held at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, Va., from 6 until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2009. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, in West View Cemetery in Blacksburg.
