Garth “Mike” Noonan Montgomery Jr., of Blacksburg, Va., died on October 12, 2022. He was born on February 2, 1951 to the late Margaret Matthews Montgomery and Garth Montgomery Sr. in Manhattan, N.Y.

Mike graduated Horace Greeley High School, Chappaqua, in 1969 after spending his senior year in Caracas, Venezuela. He attended school in London, England from 1963 to 1965 where his father worked in advertising during that time. Mike went to college at Franklin & Marshall, Lancaster, Pa. and Purchase College, N.Y. from where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. He received his Master’s Degree and PhD in History from the University at Buffalo, N.Y. under the mentorship of Georg G. Iggers, renowned historian and civil rights activist. He spent several years in Germany on a Fulbright Fellowship where he met his wife, Gertrud in Berlin. Mike taught European History and World History in Dallas, Texas and since 1993 at Radford University, Va. from where he retired in December of 2021.

Mike is survived by his wife, Gertrud; son, Sam; sister, Amanda; sister-in-law, Ursula Rath; brother-in-law, Wolfgang Urban; brother-in-law, Stephan Rath; as well as nieces and nephews, Jonas, Hannah, Max, Luise and Elias, all of Germany.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Matthews Montgomery and Garth Noonan Montgomery Sr. of Chappaqua, N.Y.

A memorial service and celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation New River Valley, 1301 Gladewood Dr., Blacksburg, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
