Montgomery, Curtis Andrew
Curtis Andrew Montgomery, 79, of Sunnyside/Tom’s Creek, VA, died Sunday, October 19, 2014 in the V. A. Medical Center, Columbia, SC. Born in Montgomery County, VA, November 15, 1934, he was the son of the late Barney G. and Lucinda Long Montgomery.
He retired from Sears Roebuck and Company, having worked in Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia. He was an avid baseball fan and played from Tom’s Creek, Prices Fork and Dublin in the Tri-County League, Tom’s Creek and McCoy in the Mountain View League and Salem in the Virginia Amateur League.
He was a veteran of Korea and a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the DAV. He was an advocate for recognizing veterans and was the founder of the Sunnyside-Tom’s Creek Memorial Park and Veterans Memorial with the names of 93 local veterans who earned war era medals during WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He also planned and organized the Veterans Memorial Association of Sunnyside/Tom’s Creek and was it’s first President.
Curtis is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy F. Montgomery, daughters, Kasey of the home, and Kimberly of West Columbia, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Wanda Montgomery, Hampstead, NC, Steve and Candice Montgomery, of Lexington, SC; granddaughters, Samantha, Brook, Rebecca, Morgan, Emily, and grandson, Andrew; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Faye Montgomery, of Shawsville; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Don Saville, of Sunnyside/ Tom’s Creek; sister-in-law, Mabel Montgomery; aunts, Verna Long and Mabel Long; uncle and aunt, Ira and Louise Long; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Fairview Community Church with Rev. Jimmie Lee Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Zack Price/James R. Long Memorial Cemetery on Brooksfield Road. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Sunnsyside/ Tom’s Creek Veterans Memorial Association, c/o Ernestine Brock, 3673 Mt. Zion Road, Blacksburg, VA, 24060. Friends may call anytime after 12:00 noon Wednesday, and the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
