Ray was a faithful member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, serving as trustee, deacon, and various other offices through the years. He loved his church family and considered each one a special part of his life. He was often called the church “grandpa” and was a mentor to many in the church as well as the community. Being a farmer, horseman, and livestock dealer, he was a hard worker. Many people considered him to be a “horse whisperer” because of his unique way with horses. He was blessed to remain active up to the time of the stroke on September 25th—even able to mow and rake hay the previous day. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at New River Valley Medical Center for all the tender loving care they provided for him and the entire family. We’re also grateful to Dr. Marshall, Mary, and the staff at Floyd County Clinic for their love and care over the years. Thank you to all who have been so good to him. Funeral service will be held at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren (3883 Alum Ridge Road) on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, September 29, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the church. The life of Ray Mitchell was a testimony of love, wisdom, patience, character, discipline, and obedience to God. “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Psalm 116:15. .
