Mitchell, Audrey Taylor

Audrey Elizabeth Taylor Mitchell, 92, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., formerly of Blacksburg, died Saturday, January 12, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.H. “Bill” Mitchell; and grandson, William A.L. Mitchell.

She was born November 5, 1920, in Russelville, Ala., the daughter of Robert L. and Hattie Lawler Taylor. At the age of one, she moved with her family to West, Texas. After graduating from West High School, she attended the University of Alabama from which she graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in education in 1941. She also earned a bachelor’s of science degree in library science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1950. Mrs. Mitchell was a librarian. After having served in various capacities in several university libraries, she served as the librarian of the Blacksburg Elementary School and its successor, the Margaret Beeks Elementary School in Blacksburg from 1961 until her retirement in 1980.

She was a member of the Chief Tuskaloosa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Arts & Letters, Tuscaloosa Study Club, the University Club and the First Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa.

She is survived by her sons, William H. Mitchell (Joan), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Robert M. “Mike” Mitchell (Angela), of Gulf Shores, Ala., Richard Mitchell (Barbara), of Mobile, Ala.; daughter, Mary Ann Mitchell Tanner (Edward), of Peachtree City, Ga.; grandchildren, Megan Mitchell Young, Karmen J. Mitchell, Robert L. Mitchell, Mary Lafitte Mitchell Buster, Elliott M. Tanner, Wyatt W. Tanner; and great-grandchildren, Audrey J. Young, William A.L. Mitchell II, Anne Price Mitchell, William R. Buster V, Caroline Lewis Buster. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park in Alabama.
