Herma Jean Vaught Mills, 87, of Eggleston, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday Morning, April 15, 2019 at Heritage Hall in Rich Creek, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Clarence Edward Mills, her parents James Denver and Elizabeth Marie Workman Vaught, her brothers Roscoe,Lawrence, and John Vaught and great-grandson Liam Mills.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Patricia Johnston of Eggleston, son Alan (Cathy) Mills of Staffordsville, and daughter Daina Aistrop (KirkNeal) of Eggleston, grandsons Derrick Johnston, Adam Mills, Justin Mills and Samuel Aistrop, granddaughters Jena Aistrop and Jessie Mills, and great-granddaughters Emma and Kelly Mills, Harleee and McKinna Mills, sisters Ethel Bishop of Eggleston and Barbara Geraldine Vernon of Salem, sister-in-law Elsie Mills of Columbus, Ohio and Lois Vaught of Collinsville, VA and many nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of Giles County, she lived in Eggleston from the age of 6. After flooding washed out the bridge over the New River, she attended school in Newport before returning to Eggleston Elementary and High School where she proudly graduated as Salutatorian of a class of 12 in 1949. She loved music, especially hymns, and played piano at Eggleston UMC in her younger years.

She married the love of her life in 1951, and dedicated herself to her children and family and took to heart God’s love for all creatures. She was a favorite of her nieces and nephews who knew to expect and grew up to enjoy he wonderful heart-felt big and long lasting hugs and I love yous, and all who knew her well remember her humility, childlike innocence and mischievous sense of humor. She took great pride in her convincing small dog bark and kittycat meow and her ability to recite the ABC’s backward.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 2:00 pm in The Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Eggleston. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours before the services.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
