Helen Fisher Rowell Miller, age 100, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, December 1, in Montgomery, AL, where she has resided since 2012. She was born in Salem, VA, on September 22, 1918, to the late Lawrence and Maggie Akers Fisher.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John 0. (Jack) Rowell, and her second husband, William T. (Bud) Miller; two children, Barbara Rowell Hume and Robert Shelley Rowell; five brothers, Lawrence, Herman, Robert, Dr. Harold, and Dr. Richard Fisher. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Mark Driscoll, Montgomery, AL; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Olivia Rowell, Montgomery, AL; John O. (Jack) and Zoe Rowell, Jr., Radford, VA; daughter-in-law, Jean Barker Rowell, step-son, Bill Miller, Pearisburg, VA; four grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was the secretary/ office manager for the Virginia Crop Improvement Assoc. until her retirement in April 1982, beginning a second career as a world traveler. Helen was a longtime member of Blacksburg Baptist Church, as well as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. One of the notorious “Golden Girls” supporters of VT woman’s basketball, Helen was also a dedicated New River Valley Mall morning walker. A wonderful and smart mother to her own kids, Helen also cared for many kids she would never meet through 52 years of donations to ChildFund International. She was a faithful friend and loved by those who knew her.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 PM, Friday, December 14, at the McCoy Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 in the Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tommy McDearis and Dr. Don McKinney officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Burial Park, Salem, on Saturday, December 15 at 11:00 AM. For those wishing to honor her, the family suggests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to ChildFund International, the Alzheimers Association, or one’s favorite charity.
