Cecil Andrew Melvin, 86, of Bland, VA, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. He was born December 13, 1934, the son of the late Harvey Andrew & Nannie Kate Fanning Melvin.

Cecil was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He retired after over 38 years as a Transportation Officer with the Virginia Department of Corrections. He was a mechanic for Dunn Motors and hauled milk for Morehead Trucking. He loved to drive whether it was a car, a tractor, a motorcycle, a transportation van, a wrecker or a milk truck. When in better health, he was always working at something whether it was cutting wood, helping in the hay field or doing the repairs for friends. He loved his NASCAR races and enjoyed going to Charlotte Motor Speedway every year.

Cecil was a good, all around guy who never met a stranger. Whether you knew him as C.A. Melvin, Cecil, “Pee Wee” or “Slobber Jaws”, he was always your friend, especially if he was picking on you.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Andrew & Nannie Kate Fanning Melvin, his step-mother, Irene K. Melvin, his uncle and aunt who raised him, Luther B. & Cynthia Fanning Havens, and two brothers, Wallace Melvin and Donald Melvin.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Wolfe Melvin; his children, Pamela Melvin & Ruben Otero and Becky & Buck Thompson; his grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Sierra Otero-Melvin, Liz Mariz Otero & Terrence Houey, Eric Thompson and Shala King; his siblings, Russell & Judith Melvin, Mary Young, Lora Thornton, Harvey Melvin and sister-in-law, Noi Melvin and several nieces, nephews and special friends, too many to list.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 18, 2021 at 4:00 P.M. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with Rev. Darlene Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in Hoge’s Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 P.M. until service time, 4:00 P.M.
