Okie Phillips McGuire, 88, of Radford, Virginia, born May 16, 1918, the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth and Orbie Phillips, died on Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the Radford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her beloved family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Charlie F. McGuire; her sister, Sadie Marshall; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Charles Blackburn; a brother and sister-in-law, Troy and Essie Phillips; and a sister-in-law, Edna Phillips.

She is survived by her three daughters and special sons-in law, Eva and Tom Owen, Mary and Vernon Shanholtz, and Catherine and Jesse White; as well as her brother, Kirby Phillips; and her brother-in-law, Quinton Marshall. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Diane Shanholtz Hartt and her husband, William Handy Hartt IV, Dawn Shanholtz Hooper and her husband, Mark Allen Hooper, Brian Thomas Owen and his wife, Michelle Meredith Owen, Jonathan Howard Cox and Matthew Charles Cox; one step grandson, Eric White; her great-grandchildren, William Hartt V, Samuel Hartt, Grayson Hooper, Zachary Hooper, Cole Hooper, Jacob Owen, Caleb Hooper, and Emily Owen; and her step grandchildren, Dustin White and Alexis White.

Also left to mourn her loss are Hope Rorrer and children, Catlin Rorrer and Dustin Covey.

She retired from Roses, Inc. and worked at Radford University. She was a caring and loving person.

Having lost her mother and father at the young age of seven, she was very compassionate toward those less fortunate than herself. She lived by the following principals, a strong faith in God, integrity, honesty, and hard work. Of special joy to her were gardening, growing flowers, cooking and sharing meals of comfort food with family and friends.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation will be Sunday, December 17, 2006 at DeVilbiss Funeral Home in Radford from 2 to 5 p.m. Services will be at the Fairlawn Grace Brethren Church on Monday, December 18, 2006 at 11 a.m. with the Pastor Lester Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Burial Park in Fairlawn. DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford is handling the arrangements.
