McGuire, Daniel J.

Daniel J. McGuire, 64, longtime resident of Newport, Va., passed away on Friday morning, September 14, 2007 at Giles Memorial Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Vincent and Hilda H. McGuire. Survivors include his wife, Judi McGuire of Newport; daughter, Courtney and son-in-law, John Scherer; son, John McGuire; sister, Christine and brother-in-law, Fred Broach. He also leaves to cherish his memory a large family of friends and neighbors, including Olga and Guerry Goode, Jimmy and Joann Hammond, Eddie and Betsy Sarver, and Tom and Widget Shannon, who provided tremendous help during Dan’s final days.

He retired from Carilion Health System in June of 2005 after a long career including work as a counselor with the Chemical Dependency Program at Saint Albans. He loved more than anything else in life living on Spruce Run in the Newport Community, and he spent many hours fishing the New River with friends.

A memorial service will be conducted at The Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke on Sunday, September 16, 20,07 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society, of the Newport Rescue Squad.
