mcgrady_james_frankJames Frank (Jim) McGrady, 85, of Christiansburg, Va., died on Monday, March 22, 2010, at his home. He was born in Indian Valley, Floyd County, Va., on November 9, 1924, to the late G.E. and Millie Burnett McGrady. He was preceded in death by his son, Ralph McGrady. He was a proud veteran of World War II, where he served in Company C, 336th Engineer Combat Battalion where he fought on Normandy Beach on D-Day, among other battles in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged on December 8, 1945. He retired from the Lynchburg Foundry after many years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Sowers McGrady, of Christiansburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Steve Hall, of Riner, Robin and Tony Beeken, of Pilot, and Cindy and Dave Linkous, of Christiansburg; sisters, Norma Marshall and Stella Sowers; brothers and sisters-in-law, Martin and Jenny McGrady, Columbus and Loveine McGrady, and David and Nancy McGrady; sister-in-law, Virginia McGrady; grandchildren, Kevin and Donna McGrady, Christine and John Absher, Jason and Indra McGrady, Jessica and Tom Lambert, Tiffany and Matthew Allen, Justin Beeken, Darren Beeken, Jessica Linkous, Jarred Linkous, and Mitchell Linkous; great-grandchildren, Kailey, Avery, Peyton, Sophia, Olivia, Colten, Ryan, Elizabeth, Kara, and Blake; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, JC and Kathleen Absher, Carolyn Rue, Alex and Kelly Tan and family, Richard Hinkley, Emma Poff, Donnie and Linda Sowers, Wayne Sowers, and Sally Stepp. Special thanks to the dialysis staff of Blacksburg, Hospice, Dr. Sklar, Dr. Steokle, Carol Ballard, Dr. Beato, Dr. Susanne Hanna and the staff at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Shepherd and Bob Hodge officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24073 or the Christiansburg Fire Department, 110 Depot Street, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Friends may call any time after noon on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, and the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg, Va.
