McGinley Jr., Charles Robert (Bob)
Charles Robert (Bob) McGinley Jr. passed peacefully from this life on June 21, 2012, after several years of declining health. He was born in 1941, to Sadie Lovern McGinley and Charles Robert McGinley Sr., who have both preceded him in death. He leaves behind a sister, Martha Ann McGinley, who resides in Marion; a daughter, Heather Wilson and her husband, Alexander; and two grandsons, Charles Fordham Wilson and Joseph Alexander Wilson, all of whom reside in Hanover County. Bob was raised in the town of Narrows, where he lived a happy boyhood full of outdoor adventure with his “buddies”, and achieved the Boy Scout rank of Life Scout. His high school years at Narrows High School included marching band, tennis, and dancing with pretty girls. He graduated from Concord College in Athens, W.Va., and married Sandra Seldomridge, also from Narrows. He was employed by the Virginia Health Department in Bath County for approximately four years, after which he became a teacher of science and biology at Dublin High School and then Pulaski County High School while he earned a Master’s degree from Radford College. He also remarried twice and divorced twice more. During these years and the years to follow, he pursued his many interests which included tennis, music, cars, dogs, motocross racing, knife and jewelry making, furniture building/refinishing, home remodeling, home building (two homes), woodstove building (100 stoves), paint contracting, hunting, fishing, precision shooting, and music. A lifelong Presbyterian, Bob served in the positions of Deacon, Elder, and Choir Director at Draper Valley Presbyterian Church, as well as on two mission trips to help build a school for the deaf in Jamaica. He was a strong believer in using his gifts, and one of these gifts was his talent as a singer and musician. Bob had the ability to “play by ear”, and could play trombone, piano, and guitar. He had a beautiful tenor voice and enjoyed singing every day, as well as performing in public and with the choir at his church. His singing and guitar playing touched the lives of many. Bob was a loving brother, father, father-in-law, and grandfather who was always ready to laugh and enjoy the moment. This ability to enjoy the moment, and his Christian faith were constants in his life–even as he began to experience Parkinson’s disease and some additional complications. However, Bob continued to recognize opportunities to make friends and smile. Caregivers at Chestnut Grove Assisted Living, Aseracare Hospice, and Family Care Nursing (all in Richmond) became his friends and spoke of him as one who would always hold a special place in their hearts and memories. The family extends deeply felt thanks and gratitude to these wonderfully caring and dedicated people who guided Bob and his loved ones through the last 18 months of his life to his peaceful final breath. To our wonderful Bobby, Daddy, Bob, Grandaddy–we will love you and remember you always. Friends may pay their respects on Friday, June 29, 2012, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows.
