McGhee, Lawery Allen (Pete)

Lawery Allen (Pete) McGhee, 82, of Narrows, passed away on November 11, 2011. Pete was a lifelong resident of the Narrows area. He was born May 27th, 1929 to Allen Crocker and Ilean Wheeler McGhee. He was a 1946 graduate of Narrows High School and a 1952 graduate of Emory and Henry College. Pete served in the United States Army from September 1952 to August 1954 during the Korean Conflict. He was hired as an agent for State Farm Insurance Company and about five years later was promoted as Agency Manager, serving in that capacity until his retirement in December 1988. Pete was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Narrows, serving in numerous capacities including co-chairman of the official board, chairman of the Pastor-Parish Committee, and head usher for many years. He formerly was a member of the Narrows Lions Club and the Narrows Kiwanis Club. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Nancy Jett McGhee; a son, Allen L. McGhee and wife Debbie of South Boston, Virginia; a daughter, Kimberly Shrader and husband Joe of Simpsonville, South Carolina; grandchildren, Hannah Shrader Sewell, Joseph Scott Shrader, and Meagan McGhee Martin; a great-granddaughter, Lucy Julia Sewell; a devoted dog, Gretchen; and many special friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Narrows with the Rev. Christopher Brown officiating, assisted by Rev. Wayne Monroe. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.
