mcdonald_mary_porterfieldMary Douglas Porterfield McDonald, 79, of Kimballton, Va., died on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at Lewis-Gale Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. She was born on December 10, 1931, in Newport, Va., to the late Douglas and Effie Hix Porterfield. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Martha McDonald Moretz. Mary Doug was a devoted wife to GB McDonald for 57 years where she assisted with managing the family farm and preparing delicious meals. Her home was always open to the many animals that needed special care or that her children decided to bring in. She was very proud of her family, her children and grandchildren, always willing to listen and share stories about them. She never met a stranger. She was a graduate of Newport High School, attended Pembroke High School and Radford College. She was employed at the Giles County Extension Office and Giles Farm Bureau Co-op. She was a member of Big Stoney Methodist Church, Pembroke United Methodist Women and the McComas Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy where she held various offices. She is survived by her husband, GB; her daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Frame and her husband, Edsel (Bub) Frame Jr., of Christiansburg; her son-in-law, Perry Moretz, of Pembroke; her grandchildren, Erin Moretz, of Pembroke, Bryan Moretz, of Blacksburg, and Sarah Frame, of Christiansburg; her brother, Francis (John) Porterfield and wife, Lois, of Blacksburg; as well as her loving extended family. Funeral Services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, in Pembroke First United Methodist Church, 5908 Virginia Avenue, Pembroke with the Rev. Ted Anders and the Rev. Rob Lough officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Big Stoney United Methodist Church, c/o Donna Altizer, 3993 Gravely Hill Road, Ripplemead, Va. 24150.
