McCoy, Fred Lansing

Fred Lansing McCoy, of Gainesville, Ga. and formerly of the Spruce Run Community, in Newport, Va., passed away on December 18, 2007. Fred was born on August 22, 1915, at Goodwin’s Ferry, Va.

His parents were James Harvey McCoy and Maude Vaught McCoy. Fred is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Grasty McCoy, of Gainesville, Ga.; three children, his son, James and wife, Jean McCoy, of Baldwin, Ga.; his daughter, Mary and husband, Jerry McCoy, of Norcross, Ga.; his daughter, Ellen and husband, Greg Baty, of Orlando, Fla.; his granddaughter, Susan and her husband, Skip McCorkle; two great-granddaughters, Katy and Amberly; his grandson, Jon and wife, Wendy Haga; and his sister, Kathleen (Hun) Williams, of Newport, Va.

Fred chose Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1930. A visiting minister, Reverend Meadows, held service in the Oak View Schoolhouse on Spruce Run in Newport, Va. Fred was baptized in the Spruce Run Creek. It was the practice of the Fred and Betty McCoy family to attend church and to take part in church activities. Fred had a combined service of more than 30 years as elder at the First Christian Church, in Winston-Salem, N.C., and at the Oak View Christian Church, on Spruce Run in Newport, Va.

A graveside service will be held Friday, December 21, 2007 at McCoy Family Cemetery in McCoy, Va. at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Oak View Christian Church, Spruce Run Road, Newport, Va. 24128.
