Billy Dean McCarty, 88, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Sunday, November 13, 2011. Bill was a decorated World War II veteran serving in the Battle of the Bulge as a Rifle Platoon Technical Sergeant in the Army Infantry. He was a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University. His career was as an analytical chemist/spectroscopist at Los Alamos, N.M., and he retired from Marathon Oil Company Research Center near Denver, Colo., after 25 years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nova; son, Gary (Sharon), Chesapeake, Va.; daughter, Janet McCarty (Frank Richardson), of San Diego, Calif.; one granddaughter, Melissa Zimmerman; one grandson, Sergeant Morgan McCarty; one great-grandchild; and one sister. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
