Glenda Farrar McCann, PhD, formerly of Radford and Salem, Va., passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 10, 2021 in Hickory, N.C. Glenda was born in Portsmouth, Va. on April 7, 1943 to Eugene and Mammie Lee Farrar and shared special memories of growing up in Culpepper, Va.

She was a graduate of Bluefield College, Radford University, and Virginia Tech where she earned a PH.D in Psychology and practiced as a Clinical Psychologist at St. Albans Hospital in Radford, Va. Glenda was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood (P.E.O.) that celebrates the advancement of women through education. A current member of Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory, she was a former member of Melrose Baptist Church in Roanoke where she served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and in a variety of other leadership roles.

In addition to her parents, Glenda was preceded in death by E. Ray Martin, the father of her children, and Dr. Thomas Clayton Camp.

Glenda is survived by her husband, the Reverend Dr. Thomas Ryland McCann; three children, Mara Beth Scott of Canada, Eddie Martin (Gerin) of Lynchburg, Va. and David Martin of Callands, Va.; and her eight grandchildren whom she referred to as her “life brighteners”, Charlie Martin, Dylan Stephens, Emily Scott, Alan Scott, Maddie Martin, Clair Martin, Bryce Martin and Grace Martin; sons, Scott McCann (Sally) of Winterville, N.C. and Stephen McCann (Kara) of Panama City Beach, Fla.; daughter, Jane McCann Wiseman (Eddie) of Hickory, N.C.; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Glenda enjoyed attending the Roanoke College Lecture Series and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra with friends. Stories of time spent on Smooth Crusin’ II on the Virginia coast, her fierce belief that we love our neighbors without qualification, her appreciation for music, trips to the beach with her “life brighteners,” and the gift of Lifesaver books at Christmas will be forever carried in our hearts. Glenda’s was a life well lived.

The family would like to thank the staff at Carolina Caring for their compassionate end of life care.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Glenda’s name to Viewmont Baptist Church and Bluefield College.
