McBride, Carrie

Carrie McBride, 82, of Blacksburg, passed away at her home Wednesday, March 27, 2013, as a result of a massive brain hemorrhage. She was surrounded by her family. Carrie leaves to fond memory Cecil, her beloved husband, of 52 years; her daughter, Sherry and Sherry’s husband, Dr. Michael Shelley; grandson, Dr. Andrew Shelley and wife, Dr. Alison Shelley; and great-granddaughter, Adrienne Shelley. Also surviving are granddaughter, Maj Maria Shelley (USAF); and grandson, the Reverend Joshua Shelley and wife, Jeana Shelley, both currently in Seboda, Ghana, performing missionary and medical services. Additional survivors are her sister, Mary Roop; and nephew, Mark Roop. She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Virgie McDaniel and nephew, Eric Roop. Carrie loved life and always had a spot in her heart for the less fortunate. She helped develop the local food pantry and often worked there. She also enjoyed working at the Christmas Store and was director of the local mental health association, spending many hours working with those in nearby mental facilities. She loved many of God’s creations, especially horses, flowers, and birds. Her most loved animal was her Arabian mare, Lattire. Lattire was raised by Carrie and lived behind the house for over 20 years. Carrie was working in her flower garden when the hemorrhage began. Carrie was active in her church, serving on many committees. She loved her Sunday School class, especially the discussions. She often quoted Psalms 19:14, “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing in your sight, oh Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer”, one of her favorite scriptures. Travelling was another love, having visited all 50 states, Canada, and several foreign countries. One of her most memorable trips was riding the Road to the Sun through Glacier National Park with Cecil on their Honda Gold Wing. She also enjoyed flying with Cecil, often joking about her and her boy friend courting in a Piper Cub. She was an artist with many of her paintings adorning the walls of her home and her family’s homes. She was referred to as a gourmet cook with desserts being her specialty. Carrie was known for her passion for shoes, sometimes being referred to by Cecil as the Imelda Marcos of Shadow Lake Road. Once, when asked how many pairs she owned, her response was something like this: “We don’t go there.” Carrie loved her home and her family. Christmas 2012 is most memorable. She and Cecil spent Christmas in Tucson Arizona with all their family, four generations of McBrides. Carrie was able to see and be with her first great grand daughter, Adrienne Shelley. The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg from 6 to 8 p.m Thursday, March 28, 2013. At Carrie’s request, in lieu of flowers, please make contributions to “Blacksburg Baptist Church, Claiming the Promise Fund” or a charity of your choice . There will not be a funeral service, only a private (family only) graveside service at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Dublin. Ray Allen, her former BBC pastor, Don McKinney, Todd Millsaps, and Tommy McDearis will officiate. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
