maupin_lester_leeLester Lee Maupin, 84, of Fairlawn, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Greenville on March 16, 1926 the son of the late Robert Lee and Virginia Painter Maupin and grew up in Christiansburg. He was a U. S. Army Air Corp veteran having served during WWII. He retired as Lt. of the Fire Dept. at Hercules Powder Plant after forty years of dedicated service for which he was proud of the fact he never missed a day from work. He also worked over 40 years part-time with the Pulaski County Sewer Authority where he retired in July 2010. He was a member of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church and enjoyed helping others, gardening and “tinkering” with tractors and lawnmowers. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marie M. Hancock and brothers-in-law Samuel Eldridge Hancock, Jr. and Robert Edward Lipscomb, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Violet Lucille Staley (Biddy) Maupin; four children Christie M. Steelman and her husband Dave of Lansdale, PA, Robert Preston Maupin and his wife Kim of Blue Ridge, Ricky Lee Maupin and his wife Elizabeth of Christiansburg and Cindy Maupin Wright and her husband Greg of Dublin; ten grandchildren Jennifer Bell and her husband Timothy, Daniel Steelman, Carrie, Sara and Christopher Maupin, Blair, Cory and Lori Maupin, and Nicole and Heather Wright; brother Sidney Ashby Maupin of Roanoke; sister Jo-anne M. Lipscomb of Lynchburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 7 pm at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Rev. Terry Woodard officiating. A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 24, 2011 at 11 am at the West View Cemetery in Radford where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 5 pm until 7 pm prior to the service on Sunday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Fairlawn Presbyterian Church or the Radford VFW Post #776. The Maupin family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
