James Hershell Mattox, age 98, of McCoy died, Tuesday, January 14, 2020. He was born in Goodwins Ferry, Va. on September 20, 1921 to the late Pearl Chapman and Luzania Harvey Mattox.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Tincie Hungate Mattox, daughter, Patricia Dolphine Mattox, grandson, Richard Brett Quarterman, his brothers and sisters, Pearl Mattox, Ralph Mattox, Paul Mattox, Charles (Garnett) Mattox, Bill Mattox, Dan Mattox, Annie McCoy, Daisy Blackman, Ethel Collins, Lena Saunders, Walter McMahan.

He was a member of Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Eggleston Lodge 309 AF and AM. He retired from Hercules Inc. with 35 years of service and a veteran of the United States Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy D. and Louise Mattox, daughter and son-in-law, Peggy M. and Richard “Buddy” Quarterman, grandson, William Shane Mattox, great-grandchildren, Rylie Mattox, Ryan Mattox, Charlotte Mattox, numerous nieces and nephews, good friend, Kent Adams.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 12:00 noon in the Centennial Christian Church with the Rev. Steve Allen and Rev. Gary McCoy officiating. Interment will follow in the Centennial Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am -12:00 noon prior to the service at the church.
