Matthews Jr., William Greer

coast-guardWilliam Greer Matthews Jr., of Pulaski, died August 19, 2013. He had retired as Plant Manager, Big Sandy Plant, Kentucky Power, Louisa, Kentucky, a unit of American Electric Power. A Registered Professional Engineer, Greer received his B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific on the U.S. Cavalier APA-37, U.S.S. Joyce DE-317, and Coast Guard Cutter Thetis W115. He was a life member in perpetuity in Ocean Lodge No. 116 A.F. and A.M.. Greer belonged to El Hasa Shrine Temple, Ashland, Ky., The Royal Order of Jesters, VFW Post 6975 and American Legion Post 007. Born November 18, 1923, to Beatrice Tunnell Matthews and William Greer Matthews, Sr., he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Rhudy Matthews; and his brother, Edward Matthews. He is survived by Edward’s daughter, Pamela Harmon and her daughters, Cathy Briere, Jennifer Isaacs, and Kimberley Kern, and Edward’s son, Darryl Matthews and Celia Taylor. Also surviving are Helen’s nieces and nephew, Irene Olson, Kent Hambrick, Susan Rhudy Bain and husband, Jeff, and their daughters, Erin Bain Hagar and husband, Greg, and Dr. Ellen Bain and fiance, Aaron Gunter. Greer was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski. Visitation will be Friday, August 23, 2013, 6 to 8 p.m. at Steven’s Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013, in Oakwood Cemetery with Pastor Terrie Sternberg officiating. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 1184.
