Matthews, Freda Stafford

Freda Stafford Matthews, 86, of Staffordsville, VA, went home to be with Jesus, Sunday, May 21, 2023. Freda was born in Giles County and was the daughter of the late Edgar M. & Katheryn S. Stafford.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Edward Lee Matthews and one sister, Betty Pearl Robertson.

Freda is retired school teacher from Chesterfield County Public Schools. She loved teaching and adored every student placed in her class. She loved to bake cakes and give them to her family and friends. She loved her cats and enjoyed giving a loving home to the cats that appeared on her doorstep.  Most of all, she loved to work in her yard.

Freda leaves to cherish her memory two daughters and sons-in-law, Katheryn & Rodney Croy, of Staffordsville, VA,  and Mary & Billy Henderson, of Pearisburg, VA; her granddaughters, Amy Henderson and Kelly & Jonathan Kidd; her great-grandchildren; Clinton Kidd & Colby Kidd, of which she adored; and her nephews, Richard & Toni Chidester and Greg & Betty Ann Robertson.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at Thessalia Community Church, located off of Sugar Run Road at 2170 Old Thessalia Rd., Pearisburg, VA, 24134, with Charles Henderson and Pastor Shahn Wilburn officiating. Burial will follow at Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 P.M. until service time, 1:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, the suggests memorial donations be made in Freda’s honor to the Jefferson Christian Academy, 219 Big Stoney Creek Rd., Ripplemead, VA 24150, where her great-grandchildren attend school. Please include in Memory of Freda Matthews.
