Beatrice Linkenhoker Matney, 89, of Christiansburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 6, 2009, just shy of her 90th birthday. She was born on October 12, 1919, in Rogers, Va. to the late George Adam and Myrtle Vertie Payne Linkenhoker.

She was the widow of William Matney Jr., of Stone, Ky., and lifetime resident of Christiansburg, Va. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by infant daughter, Diana Lyn Matney; brother, Paul Linkenhoker; and sisters, Flora Summer and Ruby Maxey.

She is survived by her sister, Mable Freeman, of Alexandria, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Debby and Jeff Powell, of Salem, Va., Gail and Ken Tuley, of Chesterfield, Va., and Sandy Akers Hylton, of Christiansburg, Va.; grandchildren, Kimberly and Andy Powell, Kaitlyn and Austin Tuley, Ricky Akers and wife, Stephanie, Eric Akers and fiance, Lindsay Pace; step-grandson, Andy Akers; and great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Andy Akers, Tyler Cook, and Sophie Akers. She also leaves behind a host of loving family and friends.

Mrs. Matney was a loving and generous mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Women’s Circle. She had also been an active member of the Christiansburg Disabled Veterans.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Vicky Foreman and the staff of Carilion Hospice for their excellent care and support.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 9, 2009, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, August 10, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery.
