Mathews, Geraldine Louise Millirons

Geraldine Louise Millirons Mathews, 86, of Pulaski, Va., died on Tuesday, December 21, 2010, in Pulaski Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on March 3, 1924, in Bland County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Cecil Davis Millirons and Edgar Hampton Millirons. She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1941 as valedictorian, was senior class secretary, and was instrumental in helping organize many class reunions. She was a member of the Jordan’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she served as director of music, choir director, pianistorganist, and Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. She was also an adult leader for the Methodist Youth Fellowship, secretary of the church’s official board, a leader in the Women’s Society of Christian Service, and served as a delegate to the Holston Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was a member of the New River Historical Society, and served on the Museum Committee. She was also member and past president of the R. Lee Millirons Memorial Society, was interested in genealogy, and served as a 4-H leader for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marie M. Wirt Gilbert. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, R. Lloyd Mathews, of Pulaski; two daughters, Carolyn L. Mathews, of Newbern, and Joanne Mathews and husband, William Flanagan, of Bridgewater, Mass.; one brother, Owen Millirons and his wife, Doris, of Reisterstown, Md.; a granddaughter, Allison Clare Sylvester; and a grandson, Dylan Michael Sylvester. She is also survived by five nephews, Ralph Wirt, Neal Wirt, John Millirons, Scott Millirons, and Chris Millirons; and one niece, Linda Gilbert Young. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 23, 2010, at Seagle Funeral Home with the Rev. John Grimm officiating. Interment will be in Thornspring Cemetery. Visiting will be held on Thursday from noon until 2 p.m. service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to the Jordan’s Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O.
