Massey, Betsy Shumaker

Elizabeth “Betsy” Shumaker Massey passed away on February 9, 2015. Betsy was born May 12, 1923 to the late Ross and Mozelle Shumaker in Johnston County, N.C.

Betsy’s life was dedicated to her husband, family and her faith. She was committed to serving others through her gift of hospitality. Betsy also played a key role in supporting her husband, Howard, during his service as District Governor of Rotary International. Together, Howard and Betsy, spent over 52 years in Blacksburg, raising their family (Go Hokies!).

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Dr. P. Howard Massey Jr.; three daughters, Betsy Alls (Curtis), Carol Wiswall (Stuart), and Suzanne Shoemaker (Mike); eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. She is also survived by her three sisters, Frances Rhyne, Peggy Braswell and Elaine Wilks. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Huste.

Services will be held at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 7600 Falls of the Neuse Rd., Raleigh N.C., on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 2 p.m. Her family will receive friends preceding the service at 1 p.m. at the church.
