Tom Jefferson Martin, 91, of Ripplemead, Va., passed away Tuesday morning, September 14, 2010, at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Martin was born on May 13, 1919, in Clover Hollow, Va., and was a son of the late Frank Elija Martin and Martha Susan Duncan Martin. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Douglas J. Martin; one daughter, Brenda Alice Martin; and one sister, Mae M. O’Quinn. Mr. Martin was a member of the First Christian Church in Pearisburg and he retired as an employee of the Celanese Plant in Narrows, Va. in 1984, with over 41 years of service. Tom has lived his entire life in scenic Giles County. He grew up in Clover Hollow in Newport. As a young man he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, established by the United States Congress. He later worked at the Radford Arsenal Ammunition Plant. He is survived by one daughter, Vicki Martin Adamson, of Blacksburg; one sister, Nancy M. Cooper, of Pearisburg; three grandchildren, Christopher Douglas Blankenship, Bryan Stephen Adamson, Jordan Thomas Adamson; and one great-grandson, Bradley Lynn Adamson. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 18, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. E.C. Redmond officiating, with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.
