Martin, Herbert Arthur

Herbert “Hub” Arthur Martin departed this life on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at his home in Newport. Hub was born on March 25, 1940 on the family farm in Newport, VA to the late Elbert Jackson “Jack” Martin and Talma Lake Bradley Martin.

In addition to his parents, Hub is preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-law, William Jackson Martin, Roy Alvis and Norma Jean Martin, and Curtis and Lorraine Martin; and his “other brothers” and lifelong friends, Nelson Hypes and Larry Higginbotham.

He leaves to cherish many dear memories, his wife of 58 years, Barbara Ann Perdue Martin; a daughter, Melinda Dawn Martin Ogle and her husband, Joseph Matthew Ogle; grandchildren, Chayton Andrew Ogle, and Carolyn Ann Ogle; sisters, Patricia Lindsey (Bill) of Hurt, VA, Loretta Smith of Pembroke, VA, and Brenda Linkous (Don) of Pearisburg, VA; sister-in-law, Maldeen Martin of Newport, VA; and many special nieces and nephews.

Hub’s greatest love was his family. He and his high school sweetheart, Barbara, were married for 58 years. They were an inseparable match, a love that withstood the test of time. Hub was very proud of and deeply loved his daughter Melinda and her husband Joe. The only thing that rivaled the love he had for them was his love for his grandchildren, Chayton and Carolyn. He was there with every milestone and loved picking with them and their many friends. He instilled in his family the importance of a kind heart and helping others.

Hub’s favorite hobby was hunting. Through the years he hunted with many friends and family, his latest hunting buddy being his grandson, Chayton. Each hunt he went on led to many tall tales and stories that was always accompanied by much laughter.

Hub never met a stranger. He greeted everyone with a smile and loved to share his life stories while being a jokester. His friends were numerous and true. He always said he picked on people because he loved them and this was evident every time, he and his granddaughter, Carolyn were in the same room.

Hub was known by many as a trusted mechanic. His knowledge of motors and engine repair is unmatched. He spent many years as a heavy equipment mechanic and left that field to go to work for the Town of Blacksburg where he became quick friends with everyone.
