Marek, Marta

Marta Marek, of Blacksburg, died early Sunday morning, February 10, 2008.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Lydia Marek; and her two loving granddaughters, Miriam and Hannah Zeskind. She was born in Slovakia in 1925, and was the only surviving member of her family after spending four years in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

In 1948, she met her future husband, John, in England and in 1951 came to America to begin her life with him. They worked together in their luncheonette and eventually had their own successful catering business in Bellmore, N.Y.

Upon their retirement in 1994, they moved to Warm Hearth Village to be nearer to their family. After her husband’s death in 1998, Marta began volunteering at Montgomery County Hospital. When she moved to the Showalter Center she enjoyed helping others and always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone; this continued at the Kroontje Healthcare Center. She will be very missed by so many.

Her memorial will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at 3 p.m. at the Karr Activity Center at Warm Hearth.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the John E. Marek Holocaust Foundation Fund at the Community Foundation Center or to Good Samaritan Hospice.
