Aniela A. Malchow, 95, joined the Heavenly host on Monday, August 5, 2013. She was a resident of Showalter Center in Blacksburg, Va., and died at the Lewis Gale Montgomery Hospital from empyema and pneumonia. Aniela (Nellie) was born on May 30, 1918, to Stanley and Helen Czerkawski in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Her younger siblings, Adam Carter, Stanley Czerkawski, and Wanda Wagner, are all deceased.

Nellie married Max Malchow on July 6, 1946, in Montreal. They met while working at Marconi on radio communications. Max was born in Calgary, Alberta and had three younger sisters. Lilla May and Dorothy are deceased and June Spackman lives in Calgary. Max died in 2003 and Nellie moved to Blacksburg to be close to her daughter, Maxine. Maxine is married to Ray Scott. Nellie’s son, Douglas Malchow, lives in Lawrence, N.J., with his wife, Joan.

Surviving family include Dr. Christine Dolde and her husband, Charles Jeffries, William Dolde and his sons, Liam and Crispin, Jason Scott, Amanda Scott and her sons, David and Nathan, and Douglas’ sons, Jarret and Christopher. Mom, Grandmom, and Great- Grandmom will be in all our hearts.

Nellie knew and spoke three languages. She was an avid reader and loved travel and gardening. She was an expert seamstress and loved to knit.

Pastor Morris Fleischer will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at Newport-Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, 311 Blue Grass Trail, Newport, VA 24128. Monetary contributions to the church in Nellie’s memory are welcome.
