Mady, Woody June Hedge
On the morning of December 19, 2013, as the rays of the sun were filtering over the mountains and through the trees, Woody June Hedge Mady, 90, of Dublin, left the bonds of earth accompanied by angels. Born January 18, 1923, in Bluefield, VA, she was the daughter of Buford and Mayme Farmer Hedge.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Richard John Mady. Also preceded in death by her sisters and brothers, Audrey Hedge Weeks, John Hedge, Arnold Hedge, Gerald Hedge, Brown Hedge, Tom Hedge Sr., Dick Hedge, and Ruth Hedge Fowler.
She was a member of Dublin United Methodist Church and had worked at various places around the New River Valley, including eight years as a office manager for Dr. David Walthall in Dublin, in the cafeteria at Dublin High School, and as a substitute/study hall teacher at Pulaski County High School.
Being from a large family, Woody had to help prepare meals for the family. With this training, she could prepare any meal and dessert in a small amount of time. She was best known for the food she prepared; she loved cooking and baking. She and her husband started and ran the Valley Pike Inn in Newbern for many years prior to Richard’s illness. In the mid-fifties she would bake forty to fifty pies per week on a kitchen stove for her sister, Ruth, who ran the Gap Restaurant. Dr. Matthew Skewes always said she was the best cook in Pulaski County.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Becky Mady of Dublin; her daughter, Candace June Mady of Dublin; two granddaughters Ashley Mady Foster (Kenyon) of Columbia, SC, and Lindsay Mady Tolar (Nick) of Alexandria, VA; and two great-grandchildren, Micah Foster and Kendall Tolar. Also surviving is one sister, Billye Hedge White of Salem, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the staff at Highland Rehabilitation Center in Dublin, and also to Woody’s loving caregivers Joyce Robinson, Eliza Charlton, and Kathy VanDien.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 PM at the Church. Funeral service will be held Sunday, December 22, 2013, at 2:30 PM at Dublin United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Jo Ellen Hetherington and Rev. Kathie Wilson-Parker. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
