James Doak Lucas, 85, of Clover Hollow, Newport, departed this life Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Heritage Hall Health Care, in Blacksburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther L. and Sarah Rose Doak Lucas; his stepmother, Thelma Z. Lucas; and a brother, William H. Lucas, of Blacksburg. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of sixty years, Alva Johnston Lucas; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Gail Lucas, of Newport; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Bob Neil, of Roanoke; brothers-inlaw and sisters-in-law, James and Bobbie Johnston, of Roanoke, Frances Allen, of Pearisburg, Frances Lucas, of Virginia Beach and Carolyn Johnston, of Blacksburg; grandchildren and spouses and great-grandchildren, Jason, Cherron and Hannah Lucas, of Newport, Wes, Kristen and Caden Lucas, of Anchorage, Alaska, Sarah and Michael Hartley, of Tallahassee, Fla.; Amber and Shawn Misenheimer, of Charlotte, N.C., and Rob and Alison Neil, of Charlottesville.

Doak was a life-long member of the Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church, being a charter member of Newport First Christian Church. He was also a charter member of Newport Ruritan Club and the United Fund of Giles County. Doak was on the Board of Directors of The Bank of Giles County, Pulaski-Giles Insurance Company and was a leader in numerous other civic and farm organizations. He was a good husband and father, grandfather and greatgrandfather; he was very content tilling the soil of the family farm, while quietly helping his church and community.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at 2 p.m. in The Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens of The New River Valley at Blacksburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon until 1:45 p.m. before the services.
