fire department sealRobert Thomas Lorton Sr., 77, of Dublin, died on Sunday, August 26, 2012, at his home. He was born in Pulaski on June 2, 1935, and was the son of the late Kenneth Thomas Lorton and Maude King Lorton. Mr. Lorton was a veteran of the United States Army, retired Area Manager for the Department of Fire Programs, retired Fire Fighter from R.A.A.P., and volunteer Fire Fighter for Dublin for over 40 years. He was currently employed by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, FEMA and the Draper Valley Golf Course. Mr. Lorton loved the outdoors, hunting, golfing and fishing. He dearly adored his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was also willing to lend a helping hand to anyone that called. Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Lorton, of Dublin, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert T. Lorton Jr. and Lisa, Fairlawn, Va., Gary H. Lorton, of Dublin, Va., and Gregory B. (Gus) Lorton and Glynda, of South Carolina; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Lorton Crowder and Johnny, of Dublin, Va.; grandchildren and spouses, Robert T. Lorton III and Megan, Charlee Lorton Coffman and Travis, Lindsey Lorton, Richard H. Lorton and Mairissa, Zachary D. Gravley, Breanna M. Lowles, Dylan M. Lowles, Mara L. Lorton, and Gregory Brian Lorton Jr.; great-grandchildren, Gaberial Walker, Aubrey Lorton, Beckham Ingram, Landen Lorton, and Haven Lorton; brothers-in-law and spouses, Kenneth Tickle and Barbara, of Dublin, Va., Wayne Tickle and Rosemarie, of Dublin, Va., and Daniel Tickle and Kaye, of Galax, Va.; sisters-in-law and spouses, Pauline McNew and Hensel, of Dublin, Va., and Lois Malone and Doug, of North Carolina; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, from the Fairlawn United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Pritchard officiating. Burial will follow in the SWVA Veterans Cemetery, Dublin, with the Pulaski VFW Post #1184 conducting the Military Graveside Rites. Visiting will be held on Tuesday evening, August 28, 2012, at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Fairlawn United Methodist Church, 7590 Brandon Road, Fairlawn, VA 24141.
