Phyllis Underwood Long, 65, of Blacksburg died Saturday, August 18, 2007, at her home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer for seven years.

She was born in Blacksburg, Va., on January 2, 1942 to the late Emmett Wilson and Nannie Lois O’Neil Underwood. Phyllis was a member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. She was a vital part of her community as a loving and caring person who cared for many of the children in her home and watched them grow up. She had a meaningful faith and positive attitude that encouraged many people that were dealing with the same illness as she was.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd Thomas Long, Jr.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Helen U. and Steve Whitaker, Nedra “Sissie” Underwood, all of Blacksburg; brother-in-law, Gary Long, of Danville; four nephews; two nieces; two great-nephews; six great-nieces and also survived by her many friends at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Rotche and all of his staff and the Carilion New River Valley Hospice and all her many friends at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center for their love and support.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Reggie Tuck and Rev. Morris Fleischer officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106 A, Roanoke, Va. 24018.

Friends may call anytime after 12 noon Monday, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive SW, Blacksburg, Va.
