Calvin Houston “Sugar” Long, 72, passed away peacefully, Saturday, July 9, 2016 at his home with his loving wife of 49 years by his side. Born, March 9, 1944 at Ballard, WV he was the son of Gladys Lester Long of Ballard, WV and the late Steward Long.

Mr. Long was retired from the Radford Ammunition Plant and had served six years in the Army National Guard. He lived his entire life in Ballard, WV; he was a loving husband, Father, Grandfather, and Brother. He was someone who never met a stranger and was always willing to do a kind deed to all that needed his help. Sugar was a great lover of animals and was always bringing home stray animals with him while growing up.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Long and an infant daughter, Michelle Denese Long. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Phyllis Suttle Long, daughters, Tammy Long of Orlando, FL and Janeen McBride and husband Richard of Ballard, WV, grandchildren, Josh and Jesse Farmer of Ballard, WV, Lailoni Long of Orlando, FL, step grandson, Wes McBride (Jenny) of Pipestem, WV, step-great granddaughter, Lily McBride of Pipestem, brother, Woody Long of Waverly, TN, sister, Carolyn Smith (Bill) of Narrows, VA, special sisters in law and brothers in law, special nieces and nephews, a host of special neighbors and friends, his special canine friend and buddy “Baby” and cat “Tom Tom”.

A time of gathering with family and friends will be 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Monroe County Animal League – PO Box 343, Union, WV 24983 or to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital – 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online at stjude.com/donate.
