Geneieve Smith Link, 102, formerly of the Spruce Run Community in Newport, VA departed this life March 8, 2022 entering the gates of her eternal home. Born in Northport, Nebraska on November 9, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Wallace and Esther Robertson Smith.

Geneieve filled her days with goodness, seeking to fill others baskets with hope and joy. Perhaps, the persons whose baskets she hoped to fill first was that of her husband and children as she took pride in her family. She certainly tried to do this when she baked rolls.

M.K.F Fisher once wrote, “The smell of good bread baking, like the sound of lightly flowing water, is indescribable in its evocation of innocence and delight… [Breadmaking is] one of those almost hypnotic businesses, like a dance from some ancient ceremony. It leaves you filled with one of the world’s sweetest smells… there is no chiropractic treatment, no Yoga exercise, no hour of meditation in a music-throbbing chapel. that will leave you emptier of bad thoughts than this homely ceremony of making bread.”

Perhaps this art of emptying bad thoughts through baking is exactly what Geneieve sought to give her family. In her lifetime, she served many in roles including, a 4-H group leader, member of the Home Demonstration Club; member of the Order of the Eastern Star; an active member of the Christian Womens Fellowship; and served as Grand Master of the Newport 4th of July Parade. Geneieve also practiced her devoted to practicing her faith as a member of the First Christian Church (DOC), Newport, VA. While all of these things helped to fill her basket, she was also fulfilled in travel, as she travelled to all states, with the exception of Alaska.

Geneieve was a daughter of the late Wallace and Esther Robertson Smith; wife to the late Oliver Link; sister to the late Robert and Burton Smith; and grandmother to the late Cara Mooney.

Left to cherish her memory to their hearts are her son, Oliver Link Jr (Krista) of Maybrook; Malcena L Mooney (Ed) of New Castle, PA; and Jean L Sarver (D.R.) of Newport, VA; grandchildren, Christopher Link, April McDaniel, Ryan Mooney, and Nikki Pollet; great-grandchildren, Ty, Myles, Alexis, and Samara; and her brother, Jimmie Smith of Christiansburg.

The family wish to extend a statement of gratitude to Commonwealth Senior Living in Christiansburg, VA for four wonderful years. Thank you to Cecil, Kelly, Corrine, Earnie and others too numerous to mention.
